DAR Eames Plastic Armchair is the updated version of one of the models of Fiberglass chairs designed by Charles and Ray Eames for the international competition “Low-Cost Furniture Design” of the moma, held in 1948 to meet the needs of low-cost furniture. Fiberglass chairs, of which the Eames Plastic Armchair by Vitra are the technically updated heirs, were the first models made of plastics on an industrial scale, available in different colors and with different structures at the base: one of these chairs was the DAR, The seat with the characteristic Eiffel Tower base. Classic of modernism, which combines structural resistance, industrial design and lightness of lines, DAR is a fascinating piece of design history, but it is above all a comfortable, elegant and very character armchair. From January 2024, the seats of Vitra’s Eames Plastic Chairs will be made from post-consumer recycled plastic. The chairs are now called Eames Plastic Chairs RE. The recycled material comes from the German domestic separate collection “Yellow Sack”, that is, mainly from used packaging. The use of this recycled material causes less climate-damaging emissions than previous plastics and uses much less energy.
