Features

Among the classics, this is probably the classic. Its distinctive, ingeniously proportioned shape made the height-adjustable table one of the most popular design icons of the 20th century. It takes its name from the house E 1027 “Maison en bord de mer”, which Eileen Gray built for herself and her partner Jean Badovici. In this codename, E stands for Eileen, 10 for Jean (J is the tenth letter of the alphabet), 2 for B(adovici) and 7 for G(ray). In the 1920s, Eileen Gray experimented with variations on her design for the E 1027 adjustable table. Just as she transformed the look of the table with a black metal top as an alternative to the glass top, she also chose black as the color for the frame. The matt black of the upholstery highlights the lines and shape particularly clearly – a design that he found very elegant. In the 1970s Eileen Gray and Zeev Aram developed her adjustable table E 1027 to production maturity and initially decided with Aram on the chrome version, with the understanding that the table with black frame would be introduced at a later date.
