Without Boundaries

Zenucchi Design Code

The transparency and fluidity of the spaces are the hallmarks of this residence.

The owners chose this location and shared the design of the house with the designers, with the goal of emphasising the tranquillity and colours of the landscape. The soothing atmosphere and the alternation of light and shadow, produced by the vibrations of natural light, were the elements on which the design of the building’s profile was to be based. Thanks to Zenucchi Design Code’s structural design project, which contemplates an alternation of solids and voids with significant swings between them, it is possible to appreciate the diaphragming of the light that changes throughout the day. And the constantly moving shadows become part of the architecture. The transparency and fluidity of the spaces are the hallmarks of this home: there is no defined boundary between inside and outside. When the sliding windows open, the house projects outwards, and the outside flows in. With sliding walls, equipped with invisible guides embedded in the floor and ceiling, the perception of indoor and outdoor spaces can change. By opening all the windows, the patio, kitchen and living room become one large room. Not even the load-bearing columns of the house constitute a visual hindrance because they were designed and positioned within the space. Even the swimming pool in the garden, entirely clad in white Carrara marble, designed and supplied directly by Bagattini Pavimenti, adds to the sensation of blurred boundaries with the reflection of its water.

The interior has a minimalist feel: open spaces and an open floor plan.

This sensation is amplified by the masterful chromatic game of the floor coverings, on the outside fine granite, also by Bagattini, and on the inside Sarnico stone. The latter was supplied, laid and honed directly on site by the Freri e Brignoli company from Trescore Balneario. The same concept found its natural evolution in the lounge on the floor below. Here, the play of light was also achieved through hanging rectangular “pictures” made of thin brown twisted cotton threads, which intertwine with the background notes of classical music to create and define a velvety, private space. This is the space for conversation or reading a book. And, as required by the function of the place, the grey palettes change, the shades soften, and the browns are juxtaposed with the chenille of the fabric of the Minotti sofa, embellished with leather cushions, matched with the Calder coffee table in polyester ebony and the antique furniture. In front of the entrance there is an unapologetically contemporary element: a linear, slubbed and waxed iron curtain wall, marks the division between the entrance area and the adjacent spaces. The bathroom, study and bedroom are all located on this floor and reflect the same decisive imprint that finds an inspired combination of antique and modern. Only the bathroom is unapologetically minimal: the all-white sanitary ware rises from the brushed basalt stone surface of the floor also used for the staircase connecting the floors. The atmosphere is relaxing and white candles on an iron tray contribute to creating a pleasantly soft “mood”. Only the greenery of the anthurium and the ice plants cuts through the spotless monochrome and shifts the gaze to the detail of the bottle of Penhaligon perfume: a personal touch that once again conveys the owners’ strong and sophisticated personality; a side to their character that Studio Zenucchi was able to understand and incorporate in the design. Not even the load-bearing columns of the house constitute a visual hindrance because they were designed and positioned within the space. All the floors are in shades of grey: from Sarnico stone to the slate with natural split in the basement, by Bagattini Pavimenti. While dove-coloured carpets and Store KK Jerusalem stone were used for the flooring in the bathrooms on the first floor, the choice of flooring for the personal care rooms was cortex brown stone, and the stairs, floors and bathroom wall tiles were by Freri e Brignoli. The carefully researched design furniture reflects Zenucchi’s unmistakable sophisticated style. The full-height doors are by Rimadesio, and the grey smoked glass picks up the colour of their profile. For the kitchen and bathrooms, Zenucchi Arredamento opted for the unmistakable minimalist elegance of Boffi; instead, to meet the furnishing needs of the entrance and living room areas, they used storage units by Porro and Minotti. Cassina was given the task of furnishing the dining area with a wooden table and matching chairs. While, for the conversation area, the choice just had to be the comfortable leather seats by Mintoti, combined with Le Corbusier’s LC1 calf hair armchairs, also by Cassina.
