Architect Togni Leonardo

In the Bergamo area, an art nouveau marvel dated 1905.

History: historia as an inspection of the past, as the study of sources, of documents that bring knowledge back to life, that magistra vitae we look to when we need to highlight certainties. History is “a great present, and never just a past”, a source of teaching and discussion. It is from here that the story of this building, built at the start of the 20th century, in 1905 AD to be precise, starts. The idea was to revive the soul of the early 20th century Bergamo Art Nouveau, that already permeated the house, and to let it fly into the golden basin; “a new style, completely different from those in vogue at the time, with an accentuated linearism and decorative elegance that shone out” was to be found. It is thanks to the patient reconstruction of architect Leonardo Togni and the workers involved that the house today boasts materials that are few and far between. A centuries-long layer of marble runs through the living area of the house, a floor in Venetian Terrazzo with Candoglia marble – that of the Madonnina, which is almost impossible to obtain – has been recovered and inserted ad hoc to revive the local materials that architect Togni cherishes.

These are the woods that characterised the Bergamo area

«I wanted to spotlight the stones – Verona red, Botticino -, the typical woods of the Bergamo area, at most a few kilometres beyond Bergamo, to avoid undermining the original beauty of the house». The colours also match the design perfectly. An adaptation to “localness”. A tribute to history that is still relived today in the fiery red Guzzi motorbike with BG registration plate that was born here at the turn of the century, so almost the same age as the house, and with manufacturing plant in Mandello del Lario, near Lake Como. And only the indispensable inside the home: a few colourful furnishing accessories and then off to enjoy the irresistible beauty of nature. An old Grundig, sorry, not old but vintage, reads 11.29, the right time to start preparing lunch, to run around the city on the fiery red bike, or to return slowly and carefree to rest on a purple blanket in a blue living room and facing a large, perfectly shaped crimson heart, whose beat can only be imagined.
