Zenucchi Design Code

Zenucchi Design Code designs the space and furnishes a flat in Milan.

Located in the heart of the city, close to the courthouse, it covers an area of 160 square metres. A family with two children live there. Weekends are spent at the country house in the Bergamo hills, where the bright light and wide green expanses make you forget the city traffic. Here, on the outskirts of Bergamo, the owners of the flat meet Giacomo Zenucchi and ask for his advice on transforming the newly purchased flat into an elegant home. Their demands are simple, but specific. They want to live in a harmonious, relaxing and extremely functional home. A modern home that can hold the whole family, including fine antiques, reminders of the solid family tradition. “The work was long and demanding,” says the owner. “We put Giacomo and his staff through a lot, but the result was extremely satisfying. Beyond our highest expectations.” The designers re-designed the existing space. Of the load-bearing structure, only the central pillar has been preserved, cleverly disguised by wall cupboards. The flat has a living area consisting of a kitchen, dining room, living room, guest bathroom and laundry room, while the sleeping area has been divided into three bedrooms and a bathroom. Despite this clear division, when you enter the flat you almost have the impression of being in an open-plan space.

The result? A sophisticated architecture that thrives on durability, beyond the seasons, not a trendy house that relishes the ephemeral..

Beyond the threshold, the dining room welcomes us with Eero Saarinen’s oval table in Calacatta marble, surrounded by elegant Frau leather armchairs. But the eye then immediately goes to the wall, equipped and invisible, and reaches the living room on one side, and the kitchen on the other. All that separates us from the latter is a full height, from floor to ceiling, glass screen that runs sideways. Through it you can see the splendid and imposing Varenna countertop. A single block, all-white sculpture that defines the heart of the home, the place for conviviality and everyday life. All around only light and extremely bright surroundings. The relaxing atmosphere is felt, and is certainly also conferred by the dove-coloured wall fittings. A sequence of concealed cabinets, made to a design in wood and then lacquered with a soft, glossy shade. An elegant recycled teak parquet floor was chosen as a contrast to reinforce this idea of visual continuity running along the walls. Its honey colour, combined with the decorated chequered pattern, makes this flat extremely elegant. A value that can be found in the sleeping area, accessed through a pivoted door concealed in the wooden wall. Attention to detail is crucial in these spaces too. In the bedroom, for example, the walk-in wardrobe is almost imperceptible when the lights are off; whereas, with artificial lighting, a functional, capacious and cleverly designed space appears. The elegant details of the furniture are countless: from the light fitting in the bathroom, to the bioethanol fireplace designed and made of Calacatta marble, like the Knoll tabletop. Last but not least, the entire home automation system allows, among other functions, the lights to be dimmed to turn the living room into a movie lounge. The result achieved is an apparently simple flat. In practice, it has been designed with utmost attention to every single detail.
