Creative dualism

White is best to add brightness.

How two creative lives intertwine is a matter of chemistry. Is it perhaps a matter of molecular attraction? What is certain is that they were kindred spirits. They knew this and their name became a dualism of creative force. Charles and Ray Eames. They can be seen in black and white snapshots from the 1940s holding hands; she, smiling, sometimes impish in her wide skirt; he with rough-hewn features, an enquiring eye contemplating colour and the image in the making. They meet in New York. Those were the years that smacked of revolution, encapsulated in a mindset that would soon explode. The common project filled their heads, there was a desire to do and to understand, to study how to make people’s lives easier. What, after all, could you expect from two beings that have marked the history of design? In the atmosphere of a hyper-productive studio, perhaps with a few squabbles, as happens between husband and wife, the whys and wherefores became reality. The first projects together and then, in 1956, what is now a pure style icon took shape. Two pieces, almost the signature of their creative dualism. Two objects in one and vice versa. I like to think of the Lounge Chair & Ottoman like this. A meeting of dreams and matter, born in a studio where two creative powerhouses expressed their pragmatic and innovative nature at the same time. It is a true symbol of design, pure essence of study and malleability of materials. Inspired by English club chairs, it best represents the elegance and functionality of the 1950s. Immense. So, in this space, in the white leather version, prized and bright, the exquisite finish and the walnut chassis become innovative features compared to the original. It is an idea designed to embrace interiors with a light-coloured imprint. The fetish object thus offers traces of history in an ethereal environment. Big lines, dynamic curves, stage lighting. The design voices debates on excellence, but does so with great naturalness and camouflages the importance in an ultimate cohesion of effect. And perhaps true greatness lies in this, in the ability to be a style icon, naturally. Context and Project in the Bergamo area, the home with its modern and at times avant-garde style rises on two levels, considering the open space of the living area that gives great height and depth to an environment devoted to the need for space. The family comprises three people, so a space on the upper level with a mezzanine balcony overlooking the living room was designed to diversify and make the spaces independent. Upstairs there are two bedrooms and a bathroom, while the large space below includes a large living room, relaxation area and kitchen. On the same level there is the master bedroom, the bathroom concealed in the stairwell and the study area. Materials and Colours. White is the best solution to give breadth and great brightness. And then, as in this case, if the light plays on reflections off the glossy surfaces, the result is impressive. In contrast, strokes of glossy black were chosen for the stairwell, which creates an ascending cone almost as if it were a block on its own. The wood of the steps stands out, combined with the steel of the handrail and then the parapet.

Large spaces and diffuse light fully represent the philosophy of the project.

The idea of warming the environment with wood also embraces the interior design philosophy, which, thanks to Zenucchi Design Code’s furnishing consultancy and supply, has been enhanced down to the smallest detail. It is no coincidence that in the living room the softness of the wood takes on almost ethereal contours in the diffused light. The Ceccotti Collezioni table and chairs in solid American walnut wood and leather upholstery are impressive. The chairs are part of the Ma Belle and Ma Belle Alta series by designer Roberto Lazzeroni. The glass top table, by the same designer, was chosen. Warm perceptions also for the sofa, model Jagger by Minotti, whose coffee-coloured leather is amazing to the touch. Its softness expands in the space with discretion, thanks also to the low backrest and wide armrests. The coffee table is the Bob model by Poltrona Frau, which goes well with the Sahara glossy lacquered Modern TV cabinet by Porro, fully reflecting the bright and harmonious mood of the room. Then there is the beauty of Vitra’s Lounge Chair & Ottoman, designed by Charles and Ray Eames, with a bleached walnut frame and white leather upholstery. The wall lamps are the Box model by Oty Light, a geometry of light that is both rigorous and at the same time in search of lightness. Throughout the house, also by Zenucchi, Athena and Mycore curtains screen the light, while Rimadesio’s Velaria doors add prestige. The Boffi kitchen is functionality combined with minimal aesthetics: the diktat is glossy white polyester with recessed handles. The lamp above the kitchen is Flos. On the ground floor, ethereal tones also reign in the master bedroom, where some details seek colour contrast. Large spaces and soft light fully represent the philosophy of the project, where the softness of the parquet warms the substance of the space.
